"Close to the Munich airport"
I've stayed at the NH Munich airport hotel (formerly called the Astron) many times, and it's always been a fine experience. The hotel is located in the tiny town of Schwaig, which is right on the border of the airport. Apart from the Kempinski on the airport grounds, it's probably the closest hotel to the airport.
The NH is located in an office park, and doesn't offer much of anything around it. Rooms are average sized, and fairly bland. It's really a business-type hotel, designed for people coming and going from the airport. A big plus is the free airport shuttle, which allows you to catch the S-bahn (train) in the airport into Munich city center. This hotel is a decent value on the weekends, as rates usually run around 70 Euros/room. It's very expensive during the week, though. The breakfast buffet is very good, but fairly pricey at 15 Euros/person.
The town of Schwaig is a small commuter-type village, and doesn't offer much in the way of things to see. There is an Italian/pizza restaurant that is pretty good, and a small biergarten. The surrounding fields offer nice paths for walks, and there is even a direct bike path to the airport.
If the price is right and you want the free shuttle, go with the NH. If you don't care about the shuttle, then consider the nearby Arabella Sheraton, which is newer and offers much nicer rooms. However, it charges around 7 Euros/person each way for its shuttle. Schwaig also offers a Quality Inn with a free shuttle, and a privately run "Alte Post" pension (which is a good value midweek).

We slept in this hotel 1 night between flights.
We booked it on the net very cheap for about CDN$ 82. - (Breakfast included)
Shuttles were on time however we had to pay 5 euros each way.
Room was very clean and breakfast in the morning was superb.
Very economical and pleasant stay
